What was supposed to be a normal traffic stop turned into St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office finding out attorney Laura Marler might have been practicing more than law.
“When the officer approached the vehicle and his natural instinct determined it smelled of marijuana in the car. Discovered drugs and money in the car,” says St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz.
After a little more digging into the arrest, NEWS15 Investigates discovered Marler is the daughter of former district attorney Earl Taylor.
After the traffic stop detectives went to Marler’s home and she admitted she had additional drugs at her residence. Upon arrival, NEWS15 noticed officers were still on the scene Tuesday afternoon.
“I’d like to think she wanted to get out of the business,” expressed Sheriff Guidroz.
Not wanting to speculate, Sheriff Guidroz says he wants to believe she wants to change her life. “Maybe reaching out to law enforcement in this way to get out of this business. That’s what I would have to think.”
One resident says even though her father served 17 years as assistant D.A. And 23 years as D.A in Opelousas for a total of four decades, his daughter is not above the law.
“If I did it I would go to jail, why shouldn’t she? She has to do the same thing as me or everybody. No favoritism,” says the Opelousas resident.
As the sheriff reiterates regardless of who you are they are going to do their job. “If you break the law or violate the law you are going to be treated with professionalism and equal justice. No favoritism whatsoever.”
Marler is currently out on a 90,000 bond.
