Former Judge Suspended
The Tennessee Supreme Court has suspended an attorney based on a recent guilty plea.
The Tennessean reported on the charges
A former Nashville General Sessions judge currently in jail awaiting a federal trial is now facing additional obstruction and theft charges.
Casey Moreland, 60, was indicted Wednesday on five additional counts: two counts related to theft from a program that received federal funds, two for obstruction of justice related to witness tampering and destroying documents and one count of committing an offense on pretrial release.
Last week, a federal judge determined Moreland would remain in jail until his trial, set to take place in June.
He is being held in the Grayson County Detention Center in Kentucky.
Moreland was originally indicted in April on five counts of obstruction of justice related to the embezzlement of thousands of dollars from the Davidson County Drug Court Foundation, a nonprofit that supported Nashville’s Drug Treatment Court, over which Moreland presided.
Prosecutors say beginning in spring 2016, Moreland took money from the foundation.
In February 2017, he became aware that he was being investigated by the FBI and “took steps to obstruct and interfere with the investigation” by directing the Drug Court Foundation’s director to destroy documents that would show the amount of money that was stolen, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Tennessee.
Prosecutors say Moreland attempted to tamper with a witness this February by suggesting that she lie to the grand jury investigating his conduct.
