To Serve Man
As an eighteen year veteran of the District of Columbia Office of Bar Counsel (“OBC”), I have tried as a blogger to be restrained and reluctant in criticizing my alma mater.
I view the OBC as a place that tries to do a difficult job under extremely challenging circumstances.
One of the most challenging circumstances is the impediments to effective regulation interposed by the Board on Professional Responsibility (“BPR”). Readers know that my reluctance to criticize does not extend to the BPR, which I have lovingly called the Board of Lawyer Forgiveness (“BLF”).
But today, I was reviewing a letter from OBC that carries a legend at the bottom. I double checked and confirmed that all OBC correspondence carries that legend:
Serving the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and its Board on Professional Responsibility
Well, my blood pressure is back under control now and I have a thought:
If that is the mission of OBC, fire all of them immediately and hire people who understand that the purpose of the OBC is to protect the public from predatory attorneys and to uphold the reputation and integrity of the legal profession.
Proposed alternative legends come to mind. I like “Protecting the Public From the Board on Professional Responsibility” but am open to other ideas.
The title is for Twilight Zone fans. (Mike Frisch)
