Some historical perspective on the salaries of associates and teachers

In Spring, I had the pleasure of spending of spending time with Jerry Carlin, the author of two seminal works in the sociology of law, Lawyers on Their Own: A Study of Individual Practitioners in Chicago (1962) and Lawyers’ Ethics: A Survey of the New York City Bar (1966).  Carlin wrote both of these book pre-tenure while he was a member of the Columbia and UC Berkeley faculties.
