Plagiarism Detection No Copyright Violation

Here’s a link to an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education on a case involving the use of plagiarism search engine to detect academic dishonesty. The article reports that a federal court in Virginia “ruled…that a commercial plagiarism detection tool popular among professors does not violate the copyright of students, even though it stores digital copies of their essays in the database that the company uses to check work for academic dishonesty. ” The article further reports that the students plan to appeal.
