En route to something else, I came across this quote from the San Francisco Business Times (back in 2002):

“Law firms are not organized so much to promote efficiency as toprevent tyranny,” says Peter Newton, senior consultant for HildebrandtInternational, which advises law firms. “There’s a tremendous fear inlaw firms about anyone having authority.”
