Convicted Former Prosecutor Suspended

A former assistant prosecutor in Michigan was suspended for 179 days as a result of a conviction for a driving under the influence offense that caused serious injury.

MichiganLive’s Rex Hall, Jr. had the story of the underlying incident

A two-page police report obtained by the Kalamazoo Gazette says Timmer, of Grand Rapids, was driving a 2009 Toyota Rav 4 east on Stadium when she crossed the centerline and sideswiped a 2002 Nissan Sentra driven by Lenia Harris, 30, of Kalamazoo.

After striking Harris’ car, Timmer’s Rav 4 struck a utility pole, fire hydrant and light pole on the north side of Stadium. The police report said both Timmer and Harris suffered incapacitating injuries and that Harris, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was trapped inside her car following the collision.

Both women were taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital. A hospital official said Tuesday there were no patients at Bronson listed under Timmer or Harris’ names.

Nichols said Tuesday that his office plans to conduct its own investigation of the crash and praised Timmer as “an excellent lawyer with a very good reputation throughout the legal community as well as the community in general.”

Timmer thanked all of the first responders who were at the scene of the March 14 crash and said that her “thoughts and prayers are with the other party involved in this incident and with law enforcement as they continue to investigate the matter.”

“I am proud to be a public servant working in the criminal justice system,” Timmer said. “I understand that as a public servant I am held to a higher standard of conduct and that the need for transparency often outweighs my right to privacy. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.

“All I can do at this point is assess the limited information available to me, and make informed decisions going forward.”

WoodTV.com reported that the attorney lost her job two weeks after the crash.

The sanction is effective as of the date of the September 2015 conviction. (Mike Frisch)
